Psalm 118:14-24 New King James Version (NKJV)
14 The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.
15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation Is in the tents of the righteous; The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
16 The right hand of the Lord is exalted; The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
17 I shall not die, but live, And declare the works of the Lord.
18 The Lord has chastened me severely, But He has not given me over to death.
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go through them, And I will praise the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord, Through which the righteous shall enter.
21 I will praise You, For You have answered me, And have become my salvation.
22 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone.
23 This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
"What on earth is God doing?" People ask, or think.
--Some wonder, with wars, fears, evils, disasters
--Believers know, and declare of God, "You have done great things, O God. Who is like You" (Psalm 71:18
With all going on, maybe God's trying to get our attention, turned upon the Lord in our lives.
What marvelous verses in Psalm 118, each has Lord in it. They were not afraid to speak of the Lord.
--The Psalmist's priorities were on the Lord God.
--He knew God. Knew what God was doing in his life.
--He says, "The Lord is my strength, my song, and is become my salvation" (v 14). All this - and more!
--He gives God praise. Declares "the works of the Lord..we will rejoice and be glad in it."
Note verse 23, "This was the Lord's doing. It is marvelous in our eyes." Gratefully gave God glory.
--He recognizes God is at work in his life! World!
--O yes, "The Lord has done great things.." For us.
--As at His cross, for us. And Jesus' resurrection.
--Let's ponder what God is doing over the world now.
I. GOD IS LOVING US - ALL OF US - EVEN THE UNLOVING.
--His love is for everyone. Be glad God loves you.
--"God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son" Jesus, to show us what God is like.
--To die for our sins, that we may live, for Him.
--Our Creator. Redeemer. Guard. Guide. And God.
--No other has ever loved so fully, and dearly as He.
The Bible is about God's love, in Jesus - Who paida debt He didn't owe and we couldn't pay, for our sin.
--Think where we would be without the love of God.
--God loves - values - every life. Able to save us.
--His love leads us to a holy love for each other.
--"I shall..live and declare the works of the Lord."
--"Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go through them and I will praise the Lord" (118:19)
--God has a personal, perfect plan for good for us.
--To know the Lord. Love Him. Loveone another.
When God's love is in us, and we love the Lord, then all that we do, for all that we meet, reveals Jesus.
That will make for appreciation, peace, godliness.
--We can be sure, things in the world would improve.
--We have a love to give. A life to live, for God.
--We have a Savior - and dear family - to live for.
--We'll have heaven's help. Life can be so good.
--"This is the Lord's doing; it is marvelous..."
II. GOD IS STILL SAVING US - WHO TRUST THE SAVIOR.
--The promised Messiah or Savior, Jesus, has come.
--From Genesis 3:15 to Revelation 22, read of Him.
--His arms are outstretched, not only on a cross but out to all who have lost their way. "Follow me."
--Hear Him today, "Come unto Me, all you...
As no other, God offers salvation by One Who is able to give it, for He paid the price of redemption.
--"Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He rose again" we read in I Corinthians 15. A sinless Savior.
--In a complex world, where many are lost, find Him.
--Many have found Christ, but there is room for more.
--God is "not willing any should perish" (II Peter 3:9).
Compare religions. Who else did, what Jesus did?
--Who else took our place on a cross He never deserved? Or, rose again? Left an "empty tomb?" None.
Study philosophies of great men. They cannot save.
--When asked what is worth knowing, Plato replied in these words, "Know philosophy."
--There is knowledge in philosophy, but no comfort.
--Aristotle said, "Know geometry," the sciences.
--Einstein said, "Know relativity."
--Alexander Pope, the poet, said, "Know thyself."
--But Jesus says, "Know, and follow Me, and live!"
What the Lord is doing in us, God is doing, for Jesus is God - the second Person of the Holy Trinity.
--Jesus said, "This is life eternal, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom You have sent" (John 17:3). Do you know Jesus?
So what is God doing? Saving people, and marriages!
--The chief factor in lasting, happy marriages is a mutual, active faith in the Lord God.
--When each is right with Him, they'll not be wrong with one another. Put Jesus in your family.
--Salvation is in a Person - Jesus, a God, like us.
--One with compassion. Understanding. Able to help.
Our forefathers came for freedom to worship not from.
--They sacrificed, and paid dearly, for this right.
--Let no one take God - or Christmas - from America!
--With anything goes in the media and internet porn, yet people are trying to eliminate God, all over!
--Support God, for all He's doing! And do our part!
III. GOD IS STILL HEARING US WHEN WE PRAY, TO HIM
--Yes, God is. But we need to pray. Often. Hard.
--We have so much to pray about. To work at prayer.
--God says, "Call to Me, and I will answer You, and show great and mighty things" (Jeremiah 33:3).
--Saved people "call to Him," faithfully. In Jesus.
--With a heart right, faith strong, let's pray often.
--God is still hearing us. And still praying for us!
A child's words are so precious to the parents.
--So are our prayers to our Heavenly Father.
--Let them be from our Heart. Sincere. Fervent.
--And in, and for, the "will of the Lord" always.
Look at Jesus, "Very early the next morning," we read "Jesus got up and went to a place where He could be alone and pray" (Mark 1:35 CEV).
--The Father heard. He hears us, in Jesus' name.
--Prayer is not a magic wand for selfish desires.
--But a partnering with the Almighty, for His will.
--What God wants to do, make better lives and world!
Truly, prayer changes things. Lives. Families.
And, friend, prayers change nations for the better.
Satan's great concern is to keep us from praying!
--No one can live wrong and pray right.
--We all need prayer. God is still hearing; answers.
--Another of the many things God is doing for us.
IV. GOD IS STILL FORGIVING US, WHEN HIS CHILDREN ASK.
--And aren't you and I glad He does! We all need it.
--Both the unsaved, and the saved. Every day, I ask.
--Our nation. And our world. All need to repent.
--We need to pray for forgiveness. And for our enemies.
--That enemies become friends. Of America. Of Jesus.
God "is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (I John 1:9).
--Only an Almighty, Holy, Eternal God can do this.
People are alarmed at the way our world is going.
--Political uncertainties. Terror attacks.
--The deterioration of morality. Drug use. Drink.
--Of the proliferation of profanity. And apostasy.
--The sirens of sin give warning! Let's take heed.
--Some have a hunger for the Lord, and His Word.
--People are still being born, and "born again."
V. GOD IS STILL WORKING FOR GOOD, IF WE ALLOW HIM
--Look at Romans 8:28, "We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."
--Ponder each precious word and promise; we can know.
--That is the beautiful thing - God works for good!
--In fact, God delights to do so for you. For me.
--All we need, is give God a chance. Let Him lead.
For me, for you, I know God is working, for good.
--Let's praise Him, as the Psalmist, for it all.
--He does so much for us. What are we doing for God?
Pure hearts see God's handiwork. Give Him praise!
--"The Lord is my strength, my song, my salvation."
Maybe for each He's not done all He wants to do.
--Begin now, by making your life right with God.
--Find the blessed assurance of salvation, in Jesus.
--Let's let the Lord - not us - preside and guide.
--See what "great things" God can do for you and me.
--Then tell others - Wilbert D. Gough, ThD, DD. 634
