PSALM 19:7-14

Psalm 19:7-14 New King James Version (NKJV)

7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;

8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;

9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

11 Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults.

13 Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.

Dr. Gough:

What great treasures God gives! Even to the poor.

--We have life. Family. Friends. God. A Savior.

--Precious memories. Many kindnesses. Heaven awaits.

--Take any of these, we see how valuable they all are!

Character is another treasure. To enhance. Preserve.

--When pasturing in Waterloo, IA, I submitted a sermon to Billy Graham's DECISION Magazine, they published.

--A Pulpit Committee from Clarksburg, WV, saw it, came out; listened, invited me to be their pastor.

--Both churches broadcast worship. Large memberships.

--Other far better preachers. Why was I chosen?

--One on the Committee was a federal investigator, and later told me they had checked my life record.

--My character, honesty, billpay, standing, everywhere.

--They checked it all - it was character they sought!

--My dear friends, treasure your character.

God's Word, the Bible, is another valued treasure.

--I trust all of us have a Bible. And read it.

--It is a gold mine of riches, to explore and claim.

--Read it to be wise, believe it to be saved, and live it to be holy and blessed. It changes a person!

--For God's best, be wise and turn to it daily.

Psalm 19 extols the great treasures of the Holy Bible.

--I've outlined it: God's world. Word. And worship.

--Another way: His creation, Commandments, Consecration. For it "is perfect, converting the soul."

--The Bible is God's gift, His love-letter to us.

Jesus Christ is its grand subject, salvation its design, the glory of God's presence, its chief end.

--God inspired it! Over 40 men wrote it, as He led.

--Written over many centuries, yet but one message.

--Its 810,697 words center on Jesus, our Messiah!

--Some of its finest words: Jesus, grace, faith, saved, peace - all have five letters in them of God's love.

--Its finest verses - you choose yours - mine are many.

--"The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want" (Psalm 23)..

--"God is our refuge, strength, help, in trouble."

--"Fear not, I am with you .. strengthen .. help..."

--Or the words of Jesus, "Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest."

--Let's share five things about this great treasure.

--God wrote it. It has many writers, but one Author.

--There are 66 books - 39 in the Old, 27 in the New.

--They tell but one divine story, "God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting li- fe" (John 3:16).

The cross, resurrection, its theme.

That's why Psalm 19:7 says, "The law (Word) of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul." It is infallible.

--God's written word. Jesus is God's living Word.

--It is all inspired of God. That gives it authority.

--It has sufficiency. It is "Perfect," all we need.

--It has purity. It can save, and keep us from sin.

--We need the "washing of the word" daily (Eph. 5:26).

The Bible is like a symphony orchestra.

--Of many instruments, but all in harmony, together.

--These writers from all walks in life, over many ages but all pointing to the One Messiah - Jesus.

--"All scripture is by inspiration of God" (II Tim. 3).

--Of scripture Jesus said, "It testifies of Me" (Jn 5).

No other book is infallible. The Bible is.

--"Holy men of God spoke .. by the Holy Spirit" (II Peter 1:21). Proof? This Book changes lives!

--Not everyone loves this treasure as you and I.

--Through the centuries many have tried to destroy it!

--Burned its sacred pages. Kept people from it.

--Skeptics and scoffers try to get us to disbelieve it.

--But the Bible endures! Lives on. A best-seller!

--God's Word is indestructible, and it makes us so!

The word of God is sure. It tells of some sure things.

--"Be sure your sin will find you out" (Num. 32:23).

--"The foundation of God stands sure" (II Tim. 2:19).

--"We have a sure word of prophecy" (II Peter 1:19).

--"A hope both sure and steadfast" (Heb. 6:19).

You shall surely die" (Genesis 2:17).

In many ways and places today some try to tear down or water down the value of the Bible. But it lives on!

--It has its critics who criticize. Satanic attacks.

--Friend, they do not know the Bible, or its Author.

To know and love someone, we cherish their words.

--We love their. letters. Their calls. Their presence.

--The same is true of the Lord... and His Word.

--Read and study it while you may, for it is vital.

--Our hearts can grow cold. We lose its blessings.

--To study Scripture hit or miss, we can miss more than we hit. Make time each day .. to read it and pray.

--Thomas Jefferson said, "Studious perusal of the Sacred Volume will make better citizens, better fathers, and better husbands." I say, a better America!

--God and His Word changes lives! Makes us better!

--I see eight wonderful things the Bible can do for us.

--Beginning in Psalm 19:7, note it is invincible.

1. "Converting the soul" - points us to the Savior.

2. "Making wise" - read it to be wise unto salvation.

3. "Rejoicing the heart" - it cheers the sad, weary.

4. "Enlightening the eyes" - opens them to Jesus.

5. "Enduring forever" - what else endures forever?

6. "True and righteous altogether" - what book is?

7. "Gives us warnings" - of what is right and wrong.

8. "Offers great rewards" - here .. and hereafter!

--We do well to mark these in Psalm 19:7-11.

Two Psalms - 19 and 119 (longest Psalm) - are all about God's Word, extoling its treasures and teachings.

--Each of the 176 verses of Psalm 119 is of Scripture.

--Each a masterpiece of old, for all of us for today.

--The bottom line - God's Word saves, and blesses!

To omit its message is to rob ourselves of its power.

--Not just on a shelf, but in our head and heart.

--To sow it in the world around us. Show it in life.

It is the only book whose Author is present as we read!

--The Spirit of God Who wrote it, guides us in it!

--Prayerfully open this Book, God speaks to us.

--The Bible is guaranteed - God keeps His promises.

--As we keep ours to Him. The saved seek to do so.

--Over the world, millions are blessed by reading it.

--Like no other book - it is about life, how to live!

--Youth seek wisdom. Find it in Proverbs and Gospels.

--Elderly like the Psalms, or Epistles, for comfort.

--All ages seek and find power in its pages.

--No other has helped so many, in so many languages and over so many centuries in so many ways, as this The Bible's treasures are incomparable, so Satan does not want us to own it, read it, believe, or obey it!

--But remember, Satan is a liar, deceiver, our enemy!

As a gift to a dear son going away he was given a Bible, but in it were scattered six $100 bills.

--The son took it. Left home. But never opened it!

--Often he needed its treasure of wisdom, and money.

--Later, discovered its wealth he'd long neglected.

Psalm 19 tells us where to find God, and forgiveness.

--The word "of the Lord is perfect .. converting the soul .. making wise .. rejoicing .. enlightening."

--Get this Savior! His Book! Let it bless you!

--It deserves a place in our heart. Home. Time.

--I find it indispensable. For things go better.

--It is, for me, time well spent for great dividends.

--It's time we make time. For Jesus and God's Book.

Jesus lived by this Book a life as no other, for good.

--We best should, for enemies are there, against us.

--Evils and ills to defeat us. We need the Lord.

--Jesus takes broken pieces, gives His unbroken peace.

Sir Walter Scott's statue was across from our hotel in Edinburgh, with other famous Scottish folk.

--In Scott's illness he asked, "Bring me the Book."

--He'd written many. His son asked, "Which book?"

--Sir Walter replied, "There's only one - the Bible."

--In life or death, "There's only one." Best of all.

What place to you is Jesus, God, Bible, the Church?

--Be sure to be "born again, from above" in Him.

--Saved in His treasures!
