Psalm 19:7-14, New King James Version (NKJV)
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
11 Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.
12 Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults.
13 Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.
What great treasures God gives! So many, to us all!
--God gives life. Health. Family. Friends. Care.
--He has given us the Bible. A Savior. And heaven.
--No matter life's trials, treasure Jesus. Trust Him.
Psalms, in Hebrew, is called the Book of Praises.
--What a treasure is God's Word. The Gospel. Psalms.
--Of the 150 Psalms, 73 are definitely by David.
--The Psalms are divided into 5 groups, like the Penteteuch, or first five books of the Holy Bible.
--If we don't know where to turn, turn to this Book.
--God's Word is the book to live by - like Jesus is.
Treasure the Psalms in a dark and difficult time, or any time, for they can calm, comfort, and direct us.
--For "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1).
--"The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want" (23:1).
--Or, "Create in me a clean heart, O God" (51:10).
--God says, "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will stengthen you; I will help you, I will uphold you..." (Isaiah 41:10).
--Or the promise of Jesus, "I will never leave you."
Another treasure is Christian character. Develop it.
--When pastoring in Waterloo, Iowa, I submitted a sermon to Billy Graham's DECISION MAGAZINE, they published.
--A Pulpit Committee from Clarksburg, West Virginia, saw it, came to Iowa; and invited me to be their pastor.
--Both churches broadcast the hour worship, among main churches in town. Far better preachers could be had.
--Why was I chosen? They checked my whole life, looked for a leader with a godly character record.
--Treasure you Christian character and your family's.
I have titled Psalm 19, Where and How To Find God.
--First, we find God in His world - verses 1-6, "The heavens (and earth) declare the glory of God."
--Second, we find God in His Word - verses 7-11, "for it is perfect, converting the soul. Right and pure enlightening the eyes, sweeter than honey..."
--Of the 150 Psalms, 19 and 119, feature the Bible.
--The Psalms their hymn-book. Jesus knew Psalms well.
Thirdly, we find God in worship, verses 12-14, as we take time to be holy, and to "behold Him." Jesus!
--In repentance, rededication, restoration, in "meditation of my heart, the Lord, my strength, and my Redeemer." Let the Lord be all of that to us.
--The Bible has 810,697 words. Jesus is its theme.
--Its grand subject is our Messiah. Its purpose, is our salvation. God's presence in us, its goal.
--My friend, find God. In His world, word, worship.
--Jesus said, "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden and I will rest you." Have you come?
To assist us, consider 5 things about the Bible.
I. THE BIBLE IS INFALLIBLE IN ITS BEGINNING.
--That's right, infallible, for God is - He wrote it.
--The Bible has 66 books - 39 in the Old, 27 in the New.
--It has some 40 writers, but one Author, God.
--It has many books, but one story - a Savior to save.
--Who is it? "God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son (Jesus), whoever believes in Him, will not perish, but have everlasting life"(John 3).
--Jesus - His cross and resurrection - is its theme.
--As God, He and His Word are infallible. "Perfect."
Psalm 19:7, "The law (Word) of the Lord is perfect."
--Perfect means infallible, so "converting the soul."
--The Bible is God's written Word, Jesus, His living Word, Who lived among us, "without sin" to save us.
--It has sufficiency, we need no other; but need it.
--Daily we need "the washing of the Word" (Eph. 5:26)
--Let's read, study, teach, obey, live, and share it.
--The Lord and His Word can make us new persons.
--As we surrender all, so God can give us His all.
No other book is infallible - only the Word of God.
II. THE BIBLE IS INDESTRUCTIBLE IN ITS CONTENT.
--Its content is so powerful and precious, Satanic evil forces often try to destroy it - but it lives!
--They have banned it. Burned it; destroyed readers.
--But the Bible endures. Lives on. A best seller!
--Why? People treasure it. It changes our lives!
One shower doesn't clean us forever, nor does one hasty read suffice for a week. Feed on it frequently.
The Bible, thank God is indestructible to make us so.
--It is all true. Powerful. Persuasive. And sure.
--Look at some sure things God gives us to treasure.
--"The foundation of God stands sure" (II Tim. 2:19)
--"We have a more sure word of prophecy" (II Peter 1:19)
--"A hope both sure and steadfast" (Hebrews 6:19)
--"Be sure your sin will find you out" (Numbers 32:23)
--Yes, "All have sinned," and need a Savior, as Jesus.
--A Risen Lord God no cross or tomb could destroy!
What an indestructible treasure, to live for today!
--To know and love someone, you cherish their words.
--Love their calls. Treasure letters, and presence.
--The same is true of the Lord. "Watch and pray."
--Spend time with Him, in His Word and prayer daily.
--It can make a better you and me. A better America!
III. THE BIBLE IS INVINCIBLE IN ITS EFFECT.
--Study Psalm 19: beginning at verse 7 - invincible!
1. "Converting the soul" - shows our sin. A Savior.
2. "Making wise" - wisdom no other book has.
3. "Rejoicing the heart" - cheers the weary, and sad.
4. "Enlightening the eyes" - opens them to the Lord.
5. "Enduring forever" - what else endures forever?
6. "True and righteous altogether" - no other is.
7. "Gives us warnings" - of right and wrong, we need.
8. "Offers great rewards - both here, and hereafter.
--My friend, where else can you get such treasures?
So let's not rob ourselves of all God's blessings.
--Don't leave the Bible on the shelf - enjoy it!
--Read. Study. Memorize verses. See its effect.
--Share some helpful passages with others.
--Show it humbly, lovingly, in our life to people.
Faith in the Lord and His Word is invincible, unique.
--The Bible is the only Book whose Author can be present with anyone who reads it! That's right.
--Open its pages in prayer, and the Lord is there!
--Ask God to speak to our need, and God does.
--It is one book that is guaranteed, for God has kept His promises since the beginning of time, and will.
These riches are a blessing - only to those who enjoy and make them a blessing in their life..and others.
IV. THE BIBLE IS INCOMPARABLE IN ITS BLESSING.
--Over the world millions are blessed by reading it.
--It is all about life we live, and life eternal, that no other can compare..as this. Treasure it!
--Thus it deserves a priority in life, as no other.
--Yet, for all too many of us, it fails to receive it.
Children and youth need this Savior, and God's Word.
--Men and women in the Armed Forces. On our campuses.
--Moms and Dads, and all the family, and the elderly.
--Those of all ages, and all walks of life, need this.
--No Savior, no Book blesses as does this Holy Bible!
--I have, in my life and others, found it incomparable.
You don't have to go to where Jesus walked in Israel - or where Moses received the Commandments - be fine for all who can - but we can follow them in the Bible!
--And learn from them what they learned, to pass it on.
--This great Book has divine directions for the ideal, happy, successful, and good life - incomparable!
God can take our broken pieces and give unbroken peace.
--Don't let the devil rob us, of God's riches.
--Satan is sure not on our side. But God is!
V. THE BIBLE IS INDISPENSABLE IN ITS PLACE.
--What place does the Lord, and His Word, have in us?
--In our heart? Our home and family? And our time?
--Jesus said, "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness ..." (Matthew 6:33). He will reward.
--How? "..and all these things (we need) will be added to you." Indispensable - faith and fellowship.
--Isn't it time, we take time, for Jesus? His Word?
Sir Walter Scott's statue and memorial was across from our hotel in Edinburgh, and other Scottish greats.
--Most everyone has read some of Scott's great books.
--On Scott's illness, he asked, "Bring me the Book."
--He had written many books; son asked, "Which one?"
--Sir Walter replied, "There's only one - the Bible!"
--For this life - and death - there's one, best Book.
--My dear friend, it is indispensable, just as Jesus!
What place does Jesus - His Book and Church - have?
--There is one God - Father, Son, Holy Spirit - and one Book, to live by .. and to treasure, more and more.
--Treasure His gifts!
