The Book To Live By

Psalm 19:7-14

Psalm 19:7-14 New King James Version (NKJV)

7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;

8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;

9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

11 Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults.

13 Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.

Dr. Gough:

What is your favorite book? You turn to the most?

--Someone said, "TV Guide." Or, "Sears Catalog!"

--But what is the book you live by? Or die by?

--What about the Bible? God's Word. The very best.

--It is "the word of life." The Book to live by.

There are many good books but none like God's Book.

--A man said, "The Bible has brought new life to our family, for it has brought us more about Jesus."

--Jesus said,. it "testifies of Me" (John 5:39).

--"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word.. of God" (Matt. 4:4). The Book to live by.

--Again, "Heaven and earth will pass away," but note "My words will by no means pass away" (Mt. 24:35).

--Jesus, the "Living Word," and Bible, to bless us.

Long ago, David found this true. Turn to Psalm 19.

--God is revealed in His creation (v 1-6), His commandments (7-13), and in Christ Jesus (v 14).

--He writes "The law (Word) of the Lord is perfect."

--Yes, "perfect, converting the soul." Convicts us.

--It is "sure, making wise" the humble, teachable.

--It is "right, rejoicing the heart," it brings joy.

--It is "pure, enlightening the eyes."

--It is "clean, enduring forever." Keeps from sin.

--It is "true, and righteous altogether." Yes it is.

--Mark them, "perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, and true," six great reasons to live by the Bible.

--Especially verse 14, "O Lord, my strength, and my Redeemer." Our Messiah, Savior, Redeemer - Jesus!

This Psalm tells us where, and how, to find God.

--First in the beauty of His creation, "The heavens declare the glory of God .. earth shows His handiwork" (19:1). A world God divinely designed, made.

--The world did not just evolve by itself! Created!

Superior to nature, we see God in His Word (v 7-11).

Best of all, we know God in a Risen "Redeemer," and, we today say of Jesus, "0 Lord, my strength, and my Redeemer." We seek to follow Him. Live for Him.

--With God's Book to live by. A Savior to live for!

Consider with me a good way to spell B-I-B-L-E.

I. THE BIBLE IS A BELOVED BOOK. The most beloved.

--You know why? "It converts the soul" (Psa. 19:7).

--This beloved Book has worked miracles for millions.

--As God with us, Jesus studied the Old Testament.

--He expounded and explained it to multitudes.

--He knew and believed it - only One who lived it so perfectly - and never criticized or contradicted it.

--He never belittled, or set aside its Ten Commandments, or prophecies or prophets; He fulfills them.

--His prophecied life in the Old, He fullfills in the New, to make the 66 books all the more beloved!

A man said to me, "I read the Bible, but I don't remember it like I should - it doesn't stay with me."

--I understood - for it happens to me. Maybe you.

--I shared this story - suppose we are by a river to fish, and there's a soiled basket we want cleaned.

--So you dip it in the river; doesn't hold water very long, does it? It all runs out. But dip it again.

--Again, the water soon runs out. Again and again.

--After awhile we look at the basket - it's cleaner!

--Didn't hold the water, but sure a lot cleaner.

--So we may not hold the "water of the word," but it will clean up our lives, as we love God's Word.

The Bible is beloved, for it is all about Jesus, and the "abundant life" He bought for us at His cross.

--Born of a "virgin," Jesus "dwelt among us" awhile.

--Shows us what God is like. To "seek and save" us.

--The Bible is not the word of man, but of God.

--It tells of our sin. Of a Savior Who defeats sin.

--By His bodily, promised resurrection on Easter.

Before printing, Bibles were hand-copied, and chained in churches and public places, because so rare.

--Those who could read took turns reading aloud, for those hungering to hear what God had to say then.

How much do we love God's Word? How often study it?

This beloved Book is a "lamp to our feet, a light.."

--It is a "strength and help to uphold us" (Is.41:10).

--A guide and guard for life. Meant to do us good.

In a busy War, Gen. MacArthur said he read his Bible, "every day." He loved God's Word so, he made time.

II. THE BIBLE IS A MOST INTERESTING BOOK.

--It contains all kinds of great literature of interest and instruction - History, Prophecy, Poetry, Humor, Wisdom, Narratives - and Good News of Jesus.

--Lessons to be learned from the past - foretelling of what it yet to come - and great help for each day. --Jesus foretells the end times. Heaven. And hell. --It is of great interest. The Bible works miracles. Without the Lord and His Word, life is frightening.

—Who knows what tomorrow will bring? The economy?

--The Mid-East? The elections? The moral changes?

--God's Guide-book is needed to fortify our faith.

--With Jesus and His Book, life is a joy, and endless hope - without Christ, it is a hopeless end.

The Bible has interesting stories that are all true.

--It also has mysteries - like Daniel or Esther.

--It even has incomparable love-stories that "God so loved the world., He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish. but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). God loves all.

--There is no greater love than that, in this Book.

--Or look at the little book of Ruth, so interesting.

Never think the Bible is not an interesting book.

--When we love the One who wrote it, we'll love it.

--In my life I've gotten many letters, but none ever held the interest or treasure as those of my loved ones or dear friends. Because I love them.

--The more we love the writer the more we love their writings - and it is true of the Lord and His Word.

--Open its pages, and ask the Lord to teach you.

--Take a greater interest in it, for its prophecies- as no other book - have a 100% record of accuracy!

--There's no better book to raise children aright.

--Its teachings build godly character; changes lives.

III. THE BIBLE IS ALSO A BLESSED BOOK - THAT BLESSES.

--It is beloved, interesting, because it is blessed.

--God wrote it. He's the real Author. Blesses it.

Readers are blessed by it, for it is God inspired.

--Leads us to worship right. To live! Live right.

--God directed it, forty some men wrote it down for a lost world to find its way to the will of God.

--For it has one sublime message - Jesus! His cross.

--His resurrection. All because God loves us dearly.

IV. THE LETTER "L" IN BIBLE IS FOR LIFE-GIVING.

--The Bible itself does not save or give life, but it reveals the Savior Jesus Christ, who is our life.

--The Redeemer promised in Genesis 3 and by prophets.

--"The Lord our Rock, fortress, deliverer, my strength, shield .. my light and my salvation" (Psalms).

--Our Messiah, the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29) . The Living "Word" (1:1).

--Jesus has "the words of eternal life" (John 6:68) .

David Livingstone, missionary to Africa, is buried in Westminster Abbey aisle- we have seen his tomb.

--He was used of God to bring life to many in Africa.

--Henry Stanley was sent by his paper to find him.

--He left with 180 different books for Livingstone.

--In his travels in the bush, only one book remained.

--Do you know what it was? The best book, the Bible!

--Stanley wrote, "I know there is a God - for I knew Livingstone, and he knew and lived Jesus Christ!"

--0 that this might be said of all of us.

Psalm 19:14, "0 Lord, my strength and my Redeemer."

--My friend, is the Lord Jesus your Redeemer?

V. THE BIBLE IS ALSO AN ETERNAL BOOK. - EVER ENDURES.

--Some have tried to destroy it, but it outlasts all.

--Critics have tried to tear it apart - it survives.

--People can neglect it, to our peril; but it lives!

--Travel the world, as I; people who live by the Bible - noticeably better! Civilization improves!

--The Bible is inspired, indispensable, and indestructible; it is incomparable! It lasts! So do we!

--Jesus said "Heaven and earth may pass away, but My words shall not pass away" (Matt. 24:35). Never.

Eternal God. Eternal Word. Eternal life. Get it.

--How? By being "born again" by following Christ.

--He is our kind of God. The One to live by always.

--Like the Bible. - Wilbert D. Gough, ThD. DD. 194
