John 1:1-5, 10-14

John 1:1-5, 10-14 New King James Version (NKJV)

The Eternal Word

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Word Becomes Flesh

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Dr. Gough:

A beautiful hymn has us often singing.."Down from His glory, bringing love's sweet story, My great Redeemer came, and Jesus is His name."

--That's what the Apostle John is telling us here by the Holy Spirit and years with Jesus. He is God!

--"In the beginning was the Word," Jesus always was.

--"Genesis begins with "the Spirit of God," and, "Let us make man in our likeness" (v 2,26). A Trinity.

--John says, "The Word was with God, and the Word was God." Jesus is our kind of God. He became flesh!

Circle John 1:14, "The Word was made flesh" - a body.

--Jesus - is fully God and Man - attributes of both.

--God "dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory," for His good years of miracles, messages, and a cross.

--"As the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." Even in "flesh, full of grce, truth."

--Jesus, doing things only God can do - rising again!

--Loving us so, "Christ died for our sins," not His.

We believe in God as a Trinity; Father, Son, Spirit.

--You and I are a trinity. Body. Mind. Soul.

--It takes all three parts to make one human being.

--So it is with Almighty God - we need the Trinity.

--Picture an iceberg, in the ocean, in a misty fog.

--We see three forms of only one essence, water, H20.

--The iceberg, solid, illustrates the Father in heaven - stationary, mighty, of majestic greatness.

Let the ocean liquid represent Jesus, for He is, for all who thirst, "The Water of life" (John 4).

--Like the rain Jesus came, here awhile, ascended up to heaven again - but is coming again for His own.

--The Holy Spirit, for illustration, is like the fog and its humidity, which can be all over, in us.

--All three forms of the Trinity all humanity needs.

A storm awoke a little girl, she got in parents' bed.

--Comforted, told, "Go to your bed, God is with you."

--She did, till more thunder, lightning; ran back.

--Again told, "God is with you; He's in your bed too."

--The little girl said, "Yes, but I want a God with skin on! Aren't most of us like that little girl?

Friend, the world lived in fear until Jesus, a "God with skin on," came that Christmas long ago.

--Born of God. Of a virgin. As the Bible declared.

--Born to die, on a cross; so you and I may live!

--Jesus is the visible image "of the invisible God."

--A God who lived among us, understands us, and loves us, "even while we were sinners." No other as He!

--We need a God like that. Thank God, we have One!

Without Jesus coming in a human body, how could anyone know what God is really like? "God is Spirit."

--He would still be a mystery. Unseen. Unknown.

--So far from us. Hard to know, love, understand.

--God knew what we needed. So Jesus came as He did.

May I illustrate, next to the church where I was ordained in Philadelphia was a large parsonage.

--Many rooms, three floors and a basement, for a few pieces of furniture. We stored clothes up top.

--One hot summer day, we needed something at the top.

--I climbed up - and a good thing I did - a bewildered bird was in the closed heated room soon to die!

How the bird got in was a mystery, but try as it may it surely could not get out, without my help.

--It was panting. Thirsty. Weary. Suffocating.

--I saw its plight. Desired to be of help to save.

--You see, it needed a Savior, who knew the way out!

Gently as I could I said, "Little birdie, I have come to help you," and I tenderly reached out to it.

--But the bird was afraid! It flew all over the room.

You know why? I was not a bird. I differed. Huge.

--Though I came in love, I didn't look like a bird!

--I didn't sound like a bird! Or speak like a bird!

--Anyone would flee, and fear, in that situation!

--Finally, both weary, I caught, watered and released that little bird, happy to live and fly again.

Listen! If only I could have been a temporary bird!

--It would have been so much easier on both of us!

--I couldn't become a bird, but Jesus became a Man!

--What you and I couldn't do, Jesus did, for us!

--He brought God down to us! By our likeness.

--By His cross, and resurrection, we be as His likeness. He spoke our language. "Dwelt among us."

--And even to "live in us!" "Christ in you..."

--A Christian is one "in Christ, and Christ in us."

--Showing us the way of salvation. Heaven. Peace.

You see, Jesus is our kind of God, we can relate to.

--Jesus does for us, what I did for the little bird!

--Only Jesus had to go to a cruel cross, to do it.

--Friend, we can flee, fight or fear, the Lord Jesus.

--Like that little bird. Or we can follow Christ.

--I chose to follow His call, for He is "the Way..."

Never, on its own, could that bird have saved itself.

--Nor can we, without Jesus; He is our "Lamb of God."

Someone says, "If Jesus is with God, He is not God."

--Yes He is! That same verse says He "was God."

I, like you, want proof positive - and we've got it.

--Study the evidence of all Scripture, you'll surely believe - without doubts, but in blessed assurance.

--As God, Jesus is all He claimed to be, by His Word.

--His miracles, messages, cross and resurrection.

--All facts prove - none disprove! - His Messiahship.

Why doubt or disbelieve? God made this universe.

--Not chance, or evolution. "All .. made by Him.

--God made us. Gave His life to pay for our sins.

--He has a perfect plan for good for each of us.

--"That all through Him might believe" (John 1:7).

Until we are "born again," we don't know Him.

--Look, verse 10, "He was in the world, the world was made by Him, and the world did not know Him."

--Many today do not really know Him as Savior, Lord.

--"But as many as did receive Him... He gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name" (John 1:12). Believe, receive!

--Have you "received Him"? "Born again?" Saved?

In the Cairo Egyptian Museum, one of the great museums of the world, we've seen a prized vase, and King Tut's Tomb. Among other historic things.

--Outwardly, the vase doesn't look of much value.

--But when the Curator turns on the light inside - a glow and inner beauty, reveals a masterpiece!

Those born again in Jesus are to be like that vase.

--To let the glory of God bring out our inner beauty.

--Let the "beauty of Jesus" shine, in each believer.

--I see it in some of you. It takes our kind of God.

Some say, "I'd believe if I could see the Lord."

--Let's ask, "Would we?" Some who saw never did.

--Look, if we don't believe His Word, would we Him?

--Personal appearance of Jesus has little to do, for either way, we still must have faith - to believe!

--And, millions have not seen - yet believed! As I!

--So many different gods! Our is that of the Bible.

--None so holy, loving, wise, able as Jesus revealed.

Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart," why?

--"For these shall see God" (Matthew 5:8)

--The purer the heart the clearer we see the Lord.

--In John 12:21 Philip of Bethsaida brought some of the Grecian Jews saying, "We would see Jesus."

--He introduced them to Jesus. They believed Him.

--That's my purpose - introduce people to Jesus.

People want to see Jesus - in you and me, in us all.

--Who are we showing them? Just us? Or Jesus?

A British Royal Summer Residence is on Isle of Wight.

--Next to it was a small cottager years ago, enquired if he had ever seen the Queen?

--"O yes," he said, "The good Queen often visited us here, to our great delight."

--Adding, "The Queen visits here, but our King of Kings lives here, and dwells among us!" Jesus!

--Jesus, our kind of God, wants to live here in us!

--I invite you to make Him you Savior-Lord, today.

--No better time. No better God, to obey and love.

--Is Jesus in you?
