MATTHEW 19:16-26

Matthew 19:16-26 New King James Version (NKJV)

Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler

16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”

17 So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

18 He said to Him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’

19 ‘Honor your father and your mother,’[d] and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

20 The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?”

21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

With God All Things Are Possible

23 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

25 When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”

26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Dr. Gough:

Here Jesus said, "With God all things are possible."

--What did He mean? Do we get everything we want?

Jesus shows us things are possible, in God's will.

--All we are .. have .. can be, God makes possible.

--Blessed are they who daily partnership in the Lord.

A rich, young ruler brought Jesus a great question.

--"What good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life" (v 16). He asked the right question.

--He came at the right time - he was "young."

--Came to the right Person - Jesus, Messiah, Savior.

--He came in the right spirit - "ran, bowed" to Jesus.

--He got the right answer, but "went away sorrowful."

--He rejected the Lord Jesus! Who makes it possible!

--Turned away from salvation, heaven, forgiveness.

Here was a good man. He had "kept the commandments.

--Said he wanted "eternal life," but didn't take it.

--So Jesus' disciples asked, "Who then can be saved?"

--Jesus says, "With men (on our own) this is impossible, but with God all things are possible" (v.26).

--What things are impossible with us "are, with God."

God makes possible our birth, and our "new birth."

--Makes possible our provisions, growth, potential.

--Makes possible our happiness, success, salvation.

--Makes possible the transformation for good in us.

--To be kind, to the unkind. Give help to the hurt.

--To be kinder and blinder, to the faults of others.

Love and kindness is a language deaf can hear, the dumb can understand, and even the blind can see.

--Makes us faithful in worship. Fruitful in works.

God has given us His Commandments, His Word to guide.

--Micah (6:8) wrote, "Be has shown you ..what is good; and what does the Lord require of you; but to do justly, to love mercy, and walk humbly with God."

Jesus condensed them all to just two basics, that we, "love the Lord our God with all our heart soul, mind, and strength .. and our neighbor as ourself" (Mt. 22).

Jesus said, "With God all things are possible," so all may be "born again" into God's family of faith.

--So no one would feel left out. Or unloved of God.

--It is in the Bible - Mark 10:23, Luke 18:24, as well as Matthew 19 - to show "no one can save themselves."

--That is why Jesus came! "With God, it is possible."

Ever wonder what keeps anyone from coming to the Savior?

--For this man, it was riches. But could be anything.

--Ultimately, it is the devil. He holds us in unbelief.

Consider some things that God makes possible.

--Only God can make a world. By creation, from nothing!

--Study Genesis 1. Or the Gospel of John, chapter 1.

--It was not evolution! Nor by chance. But by God.

--It was by God's design, wisdom, power, and glory!

--We have God's Word. To trust Him more than others.

--"God created the heavens and the earth" (Gen. 1:1).

--We best believe it!

Evolution is man-made. A theory, not fact. Is recent.

--The Word says God did it, "in six days the Lord made."

--Evolution, taught but questioned. It has many gaps.

--Evolution is being discredited by more and more.

--Many great scientists are believers in the Lord.

Creation is no accident. All works most harmoniously.

--Sun, moon, in precise distance for our good.

--Air, with right amount of water, oxygen, nitrogen.

--How lightning puts nitrogen in the soil for essential nutrients for healthy, and better foods for us.

--Every raindrop needs a speck of dust to form rain.

--How moon controls tides, cleaning river wastes.

--God made it all! For "all things to work for good".

The world no more evolved than you did .. or your car, or your computer. Creation is so reasonable, simple.

--One day our Creator came to earth - Jesus Christ.

--People met, heard Him. Saw His miracles. Messages.

--Saw Him crucified. Buried. Risen. And believed.

--Not Joseph and Mary. Not without God. "With God!"

--Jesus was born of a virgin - without a human father.

--No one else, as He. Jesus is God in a human body.

--"The virgin shall conceive, bear a son" (Isa. 7:14).

--An angel 700 years after Isaiah, spoke the same words to Joseph, to explain God's working (Matt. 1:23).

--Joseph was engaged to Mary, a virgin, who bore Jesus.

No other ever born like Jesus. Lived sinless as Jesus.

--Died a sacrificially saving death, as Jesus.

--Rose again from the dead, as Jesus! Ascended as He.

--Changes lives, and blesses multitudes, as Jesus.

--As Jesus said, we need to "be born again" (John 3).

--No offense to anyone, but we do, my dear friends.

--Church membership, or good works, never saved a soul.

--"All have sinned," God says. We all do, don't we?

--God says, "The soul that sins shall die."

--Jesus came to give us "abundant and eternal life."

--How? Jesus said, "You must be born again" (John 3:7).

I am happy to say to you, you can be saved,, and know it.

--What He's done for others - for me - God can for you.

--But God only saves those who confess sin, repent, believing and seeking to follow "the Lamb of God."

So why live any longer in doubt and uncertainty?

--Make sure today. No church, ritual, or baptism saves.

--"Jesus saves." By our faith in His finished work.

--No amount of offerings, good works, or rituals.

--But by Christ, and His cross, as we obey the Lord!

--Every week I talk to people who need to believe this.

--This is so valuable for us to fully understand, that all the Messianic promises have been fulfilled.

--The Lord Jesus completed them - many miraculously.

--Think of the promises God gives us to claim daily.

--"God is not a man that He should lie. Has He spoken and will He not make it good?" (Numbers 23:19).

--God keeps His word. Even if some people do not.

Some say, "Well, God failed me, in such and such."

--"I prayed and asked God, but it never came. He failed me." They feel bad. I feel bad for them.

--My friend, did you pray, "God's will to be done"?

--Or our will? Did we meet the Biblical criteria?

--Been walking close to Christ? Left it in His will?

--I've been disappointed too. Examined my situation.

--I am learning, as God's child, His ways are best.

--Like a good parent, He wants the best for each one.

So, obey and pray. If in God's will, it is possible.

David Watson, pastor in England, had liver cancer.

--He and his people prayed fervently, to be healed, if in God's holy will - and it appeared to be.

--A faithful servant. Winning souls. Well-loved.

--But Watson soon died - like my dear brother.

Before he did, David Watson experienced great peace.

--Wrote, "The Lord has worked deeply in my life. Not physical healing .. but spiritual healing, that is most precious. God has been so near. I know that His promises are true. "All things work for good."

Sure, Jesus brought Lazarus from the dead, but Lazarus soon died again .. as we all must do.

--The real healing for Lazarus was beyond the grave.

--So will ours be. Here, any healing is temporary.

--I've seen God do many miraculous things. You also.

--He has always met our real needs. Maybe not wants.

--He does that for all His saved ones - and others.

--Anyone who is on God's side, following Jesus.

Abraham Lincoln said, "I do not boast that God is on my side. I just humbly pray that I am on God's side".

--I believe Lincoln was. In fact, I know he was.

--But how about you, dear friend? Are you sure?

When we are on God's side, He meets our needs daily.

--"God shall supply all your need, according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Phil. 4:19).

--He "shall." How? "By Christ Jesus." In His will.

--Only trust, and obey. Living pleasing. Thank Him.

He's the God Who gave manna to Israel in the desert.

--Daily food, 40 years. Water, even from a rock.

--All our needs! Trust Him.
