Finding God's Will

Romans 12:1-3

Romans 12:1-3 New King James Version (NKJV)

Living Sacrifices to God

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Serve God with Spiritual Gifts

3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

Dr. Gough:

A father asked, "How may I find the will of God for my family and myself? To know and do God's will?"

--It has been my concern, so I shared some thoughts.

--To begin, God wants us to know His "good, acceptable, and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:2).

--He tells us how to find it, and where to find it.

--He tells what is not His will, "that any perish."

--He tells what is His will - "love God, others."

--That we be "born again," and live godly, for Him.

--In fact, praying the Lord's Prayer, we ask, "Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:10). His will not ours.

--Indeed, finding God's will is our daily quest.

Jesus teaches us a lot in the Gospels of His will.

--How to get to heaven - "he who does the will of My Father in heaven" (Matt. 7:21). Does God's will.

--"Whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother" (Matt. 12:50).

--He said, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work" (John 4:34).

--Like unto our Lord you and I "have come to do Your will, 0 God" (Hebrews 10:7). Lord, help us.

--Want eternal life? "He who does the will of God, abides forever" (I John 2:17). Value God's will.

Most of us know that we need to be "born again" for Jesus tells us "you must" (John 3); and to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord" (II Peter 3:18).

--But the daily decisions? How to know God's will?

--Love and obey Jesus. He was in the world, but the world never got in Him - for He kept sinless.

For me, Romans 12 is ideal for a beginning study

--To "prove what is that ..perfect will of God."

--"Prove" means to find God's will, by prayer.

--"If we ask anything, according to His will, (God) hears us" (I John 5:14). So let's ask Him.

--God will help us find it, as parents do children.

--We must desire it, seek it; live worthy, of it.

God says, "I beseech you, brethren," I beg of you.

--It is the speech of God's loving grace, kindness.

--Isn't that just like the Lord, "I beg of you."

--We are to give up our puny, human will for God's.

--The Eternal, Almighty, All-wise, All-knowing God!

--That is a bargain, friend, any shopper can see.

Then, it is "by the mercies of God," because all we have received from Him - life, health, forgiveness, and the promise of eternal life with God.

--Jesus came all the way from glory, as a tiny baby and "dwelt with us," even taking our place on the cruel cross, and rising again, to prove He's God.

--As God, Jesus died for us. Asks we live for Him.

--Seek to be like Him - loving, patient, gracious.

--It is in our best interest, to live in His will.

A good parent, teacher, leader gives clear guidance.

--So does God. He has given us His Commandments.

--He has given us His Holy Word - the Bible to read.

--He has given us the finest Mentor-Savior, Jesus.

--He has given us the Holy Spirit's wise counsel.

--He has given us a beautiful plan, God's grace.

--"I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV). To seek it.

How do we get it? By prayer, desire, obedience.

Fanny Crosby, blinded at birth by accident, had the strongest of faith, as she wrote hundreds of hymns.

--"All The Way My Savior Leads Me," is one I love.

--The Lord led her to rejoice in Him, "All the Way".

I admire John and Charles Wesley, great past saints.

--They found God's will. Evangelized millions.

--They helped change England and the world, with the preaching of the Gospel, and great hymns of faith.

--I have spent time in Wesley's Chapel in London and Bristol, England; and in their homes. At graves.

Bristol is where George Mueller ran an orphanage.

--Cared for hundreds of children - all by faith.

--Completely dependent upon God. What a godly man.

--Met all expenses, by prayer. Lived God's will.

--Mueller proved God's will. God supplied the need.

--How? By prayer, and daily seeking God's will.

--So begin by sincerely desiring God's will.

--He created it, has sustained it; and redeemed it.

--It belongs to Him - ".. present your bodies."

--Give God your whole body, all,bf its many parts.

--Offered as a "living sacrifice, holy, acceptable."

—The "in earth" of The Lord's Prayer, means, in us.

--We, to make of the earth, "as it is in heaven."

--We are in the world, as a ship is in the water-if the world gets in us, or water in a ship, we sink!

The Psalmist said, "I delight to do Your will" (40:8).

--Paul who presented his body to Jesus, enduring even "a thorn in the flesh," often said, ".. if the Lord wills" he would do this or that. A good idea now.

--My friend, have you given the Lord "your body"?

Some ask, "How do you find God's will in your life?"

--First, each morning I desire and pray for His will.

--Two, I praise God and give thanks for His leading.

--Third, I seek the "mind of Christ and will of God."

--Four, I let God's Word and Spirit be my guide.

--Then, ask, what would Jesus-do? For God is-able.

--Do I make mistakes? Sure, only God is perfect.

--So let's use common sense, and keep close to Jesus.

--God's will and leading will give us genuine peace.

--"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom. 12:2).

--We are to use our mind committed to God - "not conformed to this world." To think God's thoughts.

--J.B. Phillips puts it, "Don't let the world squeeze you into its mold." Let's use holy mind filters.

Paul urges, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:5). His mind in us.

A quick temper, bitterness, hate, jealousy, ill-will, are not God's will, for any of His dear children.

--I read of two sisters making a Thanksgiving dinner.

--Each had a strong will - wanted their own way.

--They got into a bitter4argument over which side of the aluminum foil, shiny or dull, is next to a turkey! How foolish, for it makes no difference!

--Lacking in love and grace, can ruin everything.

--Hasty, thoughtless, careless words are doing that.

--I beg you, "Be transformed by renewing your mind."

--Let's review: soul saved, body yielded, mind renewed, we are now ready to be of service to God.

--In the name of the Lord, be a blessing to others.

--Service to God is worship in working clothes.

Jesus came not to do His will, but "to minister," to serve - and our Lord wants us serve, in His will.

--As our "reasonable service." What we ought to do.

--Serve not to earn salvation, but to be like Jesus.

--He was willing to wash the disciples dirty feet. --In prayer, He "sweat great drops of blood" for us. So let's all work "together in Christian love."

--Not to find fault, but find accord! Peace, grace.

--A hurting world needs more oneness, helpfulness.

--Make that call or visit; write that note of cheer.

--Offer that prayer for one in need God brings to our mind. And share that smile, with "God bless you."

--We have been "proving (finding) what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God." We need it.

--It is good for us. Maybe you don't want His will.

--You may want yours, like little children once did.

--Some still do; but I've proven God's will is best.

F. B. Meyer prayed about a matter like this, "Lord I am not willing in this situation - but I am willing, to be made willing." Are you? Then, God can lead.

--Some things were not my preference, at first; but I later saw the wisdom of God's leading. So may you.

--"I being in the way, the Lord led me" (Gen. 24:27).

--These could be your words, as they are mine, and a servant of Abraham, seeking a wife for Isaac.

--He said, "I bowed my head, worshiped the Lord, Who had led me in the way (24:48). Let's do it, now.

--The Lord wants to lead us. Let's follow Jesus.

--Lord, lead us on! - Wilbert D. Gough, ThD.,DD. 22
