MARK 6:1-5

Mark 6:1-5 New King James Version (NKJV)

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

1 Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.

2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!

3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him.

4 But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.”

5 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.

Dr. Gough:

Now is the time America needs to focus on the family!

--The godly family is challenged by a secular culture.

--Today we honor all Mothers - and all families.

--Dads, lads, lassies are vital but Moms are the key!

--We would look at the earthly family of Jesus, so we may learn, and understand how, to have better homes.

In Mark 6 Jesus now grown, comes again to Nazareth.

--"To His own country," where He had been brought up.

--As His custom, on the Sabbath, He was in a synagogue, "to teach . . many hearing Him were astonished" (v 2).

--Began to ask, "Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Jude and Simon?"

--"And are not His sisters here with us?" "They were offended at Him." Jesus marvelled at their unbelief.

"The Son of Mary." Mary, a most honored woman!

--Chosen of God to give birth! Jesus, the Messiah!

--An angel said, you "found favor with God" (Lk 1:30).

--Jesus' birth was supernatural. "Born of a virgin."

--Yet, Mary, naturally, had other children - six.

--What an honor. And, what a responsibility she had.

--In the end, Mary's family all turned out well.

--We pray that yours, and my family, will do as well.

Look at the value of a godly home, now more than ever.

--The Bible begins with Genesis - God in the home.

--Exodus is about God in the nation. Family is first!

--Believe me, home is the foundation of a nation!

--As families go, so goes the nation, my friend!

There are over 350 women in the Bible - not just men.

--Sixty women of great prominence. All important.

--There is Eve, mother of all living. Sarah. Miriam.

--Rachel and Leah, Hannah, Ruth, Esther, Elizabeth.

--Mary and Martha, Dorcas, Lydia, Eunice and Lois.

--These, and many others, all with a story, of God.

Jesus honored His mother. All mothers. All women.

--Raised them to respect, admiration, and equality.

--He returns home and "Could do no mighty work .. for their unbelief." Unbelief robs us of God's gifts!

The people of Nazareth knew Jesus as a boy growing up.

--But Jesus is God! They tried to "kill Him," at the town cliff, on His first return, but He escaped.

--On this second visit home, "when the sabbath had come He began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing Him were astonished" (Mark 6:2). Just listen to Him!

--Said, "Where did this Man get these things?"

--"And what wisdom .. which is given Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands." Miracles!

They continue, saying, we know this fellow. "Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary .. the brother of James, Joseph, Jude and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" So they were offended at Him." (v 3).

--They did not believe Nazareth could produce Jesus!

--Nazareth didn't do it! God did! By a Mother!

Back of every great and godly person is a godly Mother, or Father .. and so much better, if by both of them!

A lad wrote his grandparents, "Mommy and Daddy pulled my first tooth today - but it was mostly Mommy."

--When it comes to raising children - mostly Mommy.

--Dads, don't leave it all up to Mom, or the church!

--Families need godly fathers to teach and train also!

Many a wayward child, gone with the world, was brought back to the Lord by persistent prayers of parents!

--I think of St. Augustine, whose Mother, Monica, kept praying for Augustine to be saved - he finally did!

--I think of the Mother of C.I. Scofield whose prayers converted him from sin and alcoholism, to edit a Bible - able to bring others to be "born again!"

--Individual and family altars, alter many families!

Let's get acquainted with Mary a bit. Perfect? No.

--In her goodness, she needed a Savior, and said so.

--Luke 1:47, look at it, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior."

--Pure and good, a virgin; yet like we all, needed the new birth in "God my Savior." So do you and I.

Study Mary's life. Struggles. Ridicule. Difficulty.

--She both had the duties of a large family, and a misunderstanding by some of the deity of Jesus!

Mary stands apart from all other mothers in history.

--Yet, her honor had a humble beginning.

--Mary was an ordinary, obscure, pure, peasant girl.

--A virgin. Yielded to God. Chosen to bear Messiah.

--To give birth to Jesus - God and Man - in God's plan.

--Yet, Jesus always was! With the Triune Godhead.

--He came to show what God is like, and to redeem.

--Mary, devotedly, followed Jesus, even to a cross.

Scripture and history reveal other great mothers.

--Susanna Wesley, mother of John and Charles Wesley,is a fine example of faith and motherhood.

--She taught her 17 children the Bible, and prayer!

--Molded their lives to influence a nation, and world!

Robert Moffatt, great missionary, had a godly mother.

--Taught her family well, about the Lord.

--Got Robert to promise her to begin and end each day, in prayer; seek the presence of Jesus. It works!

The Bible teaches that children need mother's teaching.

--That the older women are to train the younger.

Study the stories of fallen cities and civilizations of the Middle East .. of Greece and Roman Empires.

--We find, prior to their fall, was a "breakdown of the family, and home." My friend, it can happen here!

--What do some children say they fear most? Divorce!

--Forces today are at work to weaken families, homes!

--Fortify yours, my friend, with a firm faith in God!

Hear the angel to Mary, "You have found favor with God. You will bring forth a Son .. He shall save His people, from their sins (Luke 1:30f). We all need a Savior.

There are women in my life I owe my all - mother, wife.

--To these, and grandparents, aunts, uncles, I owe all.

--Mothers, and others, I am debtor, and hold dear.

Thank God for your parents. Your family. Love them!

--Tell them so, often. Give them hugs. Visit. Call.

--Don't expect perfection. No life is - except Jesus.

--Families grow up. Tensions and trials come.

--Mary's family - Jesus grew up in - had its troubles.

--Share all yours with the Lord, for His blessing.

This holy family was something like our own families.

--Doesn't always go smooth, or sunshine, do they?

--They had problems too. The Gospels tell of some.

--"His brothers did not believe in Him" (John 7:5).

--They sometimes gave Jesus a hard time.

--Taunted Him in unbelief. Unpleasantness.

--Jesus took it quietly, peaceably. As we all ought.

You recall Jesus' "brothers and His mother came, sent to Him, calling Him," to come on home.

--Some thought Jesus was wrong, in Mark 3:31, etc.

--They sought to restrain Jesus in His ministry.

--They had good intentions, I'm sure, but were wrong.

--Jesus has a divine mission! He is always right!

So as a Mother, Mary had to keep peace in the home.

--To heal hearts. Doctor hurts. Dry the tears.

--Listen to differences. Praying all the while.

--Mothers do it so well! "Children call them blessed of the Lord" and, cherish their loving care.

Before the cross, "His brothers did not believe in Him" as sometimes, a family member may have some doubts.

--Let's be prayerful. Patient. Persistent in faith.

--Be consistent in living a Christ-like life.

--Be encouraging of such individuals, as Jesus would.

--As we do, Acts 16:31 says, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." Your faithful witness will be rewarded!

--After Jesus' resurrection, "His brothers believed!"

0, the power of Christ, His cross and resurrection, to make great believers of skeptics and sinners!

--All Jesus' brothers, believers! Born again. Saved.

--James and Jude both wrote Epistles in the Bible!

--Leaders, pastors, in the church in Jerusalem!

--Love, prayer, time, faith, can change all, hearts!

To you families - each one in them - love one another.

--Show it and tell one another, "I love you," often.

--Give a few hugs. Compliments. Be understanding.

--God wants to be "the God of all families" (Jer.31:1).

--Make Jesus your Savior, and bring God in your home.

--Have a family altar. Time to pray, read God's Word.

--Families, put God first!
