JOHN 14:1-6

John 14:1-6 New King James Version (NKJV)

The Way, the Truth, and the Life

1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.

2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Dr. Gough:

"Do we know each other in heaven?" I am often asked.

--Jesus Who came from heaven and returned, tells us.

--In John 14, this most comforting chapter, we know.

--It tells of salvation, and assurance of heaven.

It is in God's Person. "You believe in God, believe also in Me," that is, in Jesus, part of the Trinity.

--God in the flesh, came to save us in His cross.

It is in God's Place. "I go to prepare a place..."

--Heaven is a "place" where God, and saints, abide.

--It is a perfect, and incomparable, holy place.

--Not a state of mind, or imagination, but a "place."

—"When perfection comes what is imperfect is set aside; now we see dim reflection, but then we shall see face to face and know perfectly as God knows me.

--Mark it in your Bible, I Cor. 13:10 Williams Tr.

--He is speaking of heaven our eternal home!

It is by God's Promise, "To receive you unto Myself."

--That's us, unto the Lord, in the place He has made.

--"That where I am, there you may be also" (v 3).

--Some 700 times God's Word mentions about heaven.

--The home of those "born again" by faith in Him.

--Heaven, where there is "no more sea," or sin.

--"No more tears, no more death, neither sorrow, crying, and no more pain." No more separation!

--Where all things "are become new." With God.

--Isn't all this worth believing? Living for God?

It is by God's Plan. Jesus said, "I am the way..."

--He is not a way, but "the way." Not directs us.

--He is "the way." Takes us. So we can't be lost.

--He is "the way, the truth, and the life but also, "No one comes to the Father except through Me" (6).

Growing up, losing grandparents, I thought of heaven.

--Whence have we come? From God. He made us.

--Why are we here? God has a plan for good, for us.

--If we die do we live again? Yes, we all do.

--Where do we go? Saved to heaven, Others to hell.

--Do we know each other there? Of course we will.

I have many loved ones and friends in heaven, to see.

--I am sure you do as well. The Lord and His saints.

--Let me tell you, from God's Word, why we will know.

--Jesus said, "In My Father's house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you .. where I am, there you may be also" (John 14:2,3). That's heaven.

--God is there - Father, Son, Holy Spirit - to greet.

--Heaven has always been His home. He wants us there.

--Holy angels are there. Prophets and patriarchs.

--The Twelve Apostles of Jesus. All the redeemed.

--Of all nations. All times.. Known and unknown.

--I want to know them, as well as my loved ones all.

God wants us to do so. Why Jesus came, died, arose.

Earth is beautiful, but can't compare with heaven!

--All the grandeur and glory, beyond word or thought.

--Its joys! No night. No sickness, sorrow, parting.

--No disappointments. Hunger. No death or funerals.

--No tears. No fears. And no sad farewells.

--Where we will never grow old! No earthly woes!

God says, "No eye has seen, no ear heard, no mind conceived, what God has prepared for those who love Him, but God has revealed it to us by His Spirit" (I Cor 2).

--No paradise on earth compares with that of heaven!

--God wants us there. To know it, and one another!

The little 4-year-old girl sobbed on her Mother's lap.

--She had just lost her grandmother, her Mom's mom.

--Her Mother's explanation, tender caresses tried her tears, and calmed her fears of death and grief.

--When sobs ceased, she said, "Mommy, do you want God to hold you? Let God hold you; and wipe tears away. God Who washes away tears, can also wash away sins.

--Come, live for the Lord - united in His love.

--Knowing Him as Savior, assures we know, in heaven.

--In fact, we'll know so much more! Perfection comes.

--Most Bible books teach us something about eternity.

--About heaven, and how to get there.

The human mind is a residue of intelligence, memory.

--Get "wisdom and understanding" to seek God's will.

--To know about our world. How to reduce ills.

--Learn all we can about God, eternity, and heaven.

--Learning for a lifetime yet know so, so little.

--"Then I shall know perfectly, as God knows me."

—And we can know and love Him more, and one another!

It is as simple as this; we know family, friends here, and love being together, don't you think we can there?

To live forever .. together, and not know is folly.

--It is contrary to the very heart and nature of God!

--I believe "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable ..." (II Timothy 3:16).

--The Bible tells of a number of recognition times.

--Some people in paradise long centuries, yet recognized, for who they were, by people on earth.

I Samuel 28, Saul knew Samuel the prophet, long gone, when Samuel appeared, and spoke with Saul.

Matthew 28:9, the women early at the tomb on Easter - Resurrection Morning- recognized their Risen Lord.

--Jesus spoke to them. "They worshiped Him, spoke."

Stephen, stoned and dying, recognized the Risen Jesus, then in heaven at the throne, "standing on the right side of God" the Father (Acts 7:55f).

Jesus said, even little children who die, "behold the face of My Father Who is in heaven" (Matt. 18:10).

--Remember when David lost his little child, after he fasted, wept, in prayer all night, said, "now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me" we read in II Samuel 12:15-23. Would see, in heaven.

Better still, turn to Matthew 17, Jesus "transformed".

--On the holy mount Jesus shows us our heavenly body!

--Jesus, in a blaze of glory, "face like the sun."

--"His clothes became as white as light" (Mt. 17:2).

--Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus, and 3 Apostles.

--They came for a purpose, to show we know, in heaven!

--They talked with Jesus, of His impending cross!

--For over 3000 years people have loved Psalm 23.

--"The Lord is my Shepherd .. though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death .. I will fear no evil . . for I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

--In Luke 16, Jesus tells of two men's life and death.

--One, a "rich man who died .. went to Hades" (v 23).

--Missed heaven, not because rich! For his unbelief!

--Lazarus, a beggar, was a believer in the Lord Jesus.

--On earth Lazarus got the "crumbs" in a rough life.

--yet is in heaven not because poor - but he believed!

In heaven, or in hell, each knew people, and place.

--The rich man, in hell, was "in torment." Conscious!

--"Saw afar off .. begged for water .. cool my tongue."

--Wanted to warn his brothers, "lest they come here!"

--What a real, true record of knowledge hereafter!

--Jesus, as God from heaven, risen, gives His Word.

--Some question this promise, of how it can be?

--The God who made the world and hangs it "on nothing"

Who rose from a sealed tomb, ascended to heaven, before their eyes, surely can do what He says.

May I illustrate with this of Dr. William Pettingill, of our Bible College, invited to a steel mill.

--The owner of the mill in Philadelphia, a Christian.

--They spoke of Christ's resurrection and His return.

--As they walked, the owner said, "there's no doubt"

--"Beneath this hard-packed road are iron scraps that are invisible, beaten down by truck traffic."

--He had the operator, "Turn on your electro-magnet."

--Up, from the road leaped metal pieces of all sizes!

--Altogether, like we will be - if we're still alive!

--Jesus will raise His own from raves, and lift living saved, into the air - "changed, in the air, and to forever be with Him" to never die (I Thes. 4).

--That's the good news of the "Gospel," in Christ.

We'll know each other, if we make sure in Jesus here.

--Jesus says, "Come to Me."
