John 10:1-10

John 10:1-10 New King James Version (NKJV)

Jesus the True Shepherd

1 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

5 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”

6 Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.

Jesus the Good Shepherd

7 Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

8 All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.

9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.

10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Dr. Gough:

Does heaven have a door? Yes. It is Jesus, He said.

--"I am the Door." No other can say, or fulfill that.

--Doors are essential for entry, everywhere.

--We saw one in Florence, Italy, Michaelangelo said it "is worthy of paradise."

--But none compares to Jesus.

--Today to enter heaven, Jesus said, "I am the Door."

To help explain, Jesus likens Himself to many things.

--"Bread, water, light, a vine, a door" - of life.

--These are some of the fourteen "I Am's" of Jesus.

--In John 10 He is the "door of the sheepfold" (v 1).

--Again, "The door is the shepherd" (v 2).

--"I am the door of the sheep" (v 7).

--"I am the door. If anyone enters by Me he will be saved, and go in and out and find pasture" (v 9).

--"I am the door." Note the progression of each word.

--"I" - identifies Jesus. God. Eternal. Sinless.

--"Am" - affirms His deity - part of the Holy Trinity.

--It takes us back to Exodus 3, to a burning bush, the only true and living God states His name, "I Am."

--"The" - third word, 3 letters - the only God revealed in the flesh - not one of many gods.

--A God of love, not enmity; of kindness, not cruelty.

--"Door" - word four, 4 letters, is the way to enter.

--Since Jesus came that Christmas, "the way of life."

--Not by church, ritual, baptism - by Jesus' cross.

--To pay for our sins. Arose again, to give us life!

In a tour of Brussels our guide showed its Civic Center Square, and its historic Guild houses around it.

--In the Middle Ages, all crafts had Guilds.

--The Carpenter's Guild had a cross as its symbol.

--They built a cross in every door. They still do.

--Look at your doors. They have a message.

So does Jesus have a message to all, in John 10.

--He tells Israel and the world, "I am the door .. if anyone enters by Me he will be saved" (v 9).

--Formerly they had lambs, sacrifice, rituals, laws.

--Jesus fulfills these. Kept what we could not keep.

--Solomon's temple doors were olive wood and gold.

--The door of Jesus is stained with His holy blood.

In the Holy Land we've seen many sheepfolds, but every one had only one door. That door .. was a person.

--There was no gate to close. A shepherd was it.

--Keeping watch over the various flocks of others.

--Only one shepherd, for all the sheep in his care.

--When Jesus said, "I am the door," they all knew what Jesus meant. Join with me to notice four things.

I. JESUS IS THE DOOR TO HEAVEN. That's what He said.

--From Genesis to Malachi, all longed for a Savior.

--A Messiah, to restore what Adam and Eve lost for us.

--Patriarchs and prophets promised. Jesus fulfilled!

--Hundreds of prophecies, perfectly. Many miracles.

--Incomparable messages. His cross, for you and me.

--His glorious resurrection. None can compare!

--By "many infallible proofs" (Acts 1:3). Proofs!

--Jesus rightly claims, "I am the door .. be saved."

--The door to what? To heaven! A real place!

Friends, life doesn't end when we die! We live on.

--For believers, Jesus said, "I go to prepare a place for you .. where I am, you may be also" (John 14:3).

--Where is Jesus? In heaven, the abode of God!

Notice, Jesus did not say, "I am a way - one of many."

--What he said is, "I am the way" - the only way since that first Christmas, as He fulfilled the other way.

--The old covenant, of the Old Testament, completed.

--When they had rituals, sacrifices, festivals, laws.

--"The Law came by Moses ; grace and truth came by Jesus Christ" (John 1:17 KJV). "The Door" is Jesus.

You may say, "That's narrow-minded." So is science.

--So is arithmetic, mathematics, computers, and so on.

--Exactness is essential, or it does not work.

--Let's not waterdown, weaken or change God's Word to suit ourselves, or another. It is God's heaven.

--The Bible says, "Man's way will not get us there."

Carved over St. Sophia's, Istanbul, are the words of Jesus, "I am the door."

--Friends, Noah's Ark had only one door. Also, heaven.

--Come in by the door. Not by some other way of ours.

--Ever get problems? Down-hearted? Disappointed?

--Of course, we all do at times. Where do we go?

--A little talk with God brings out the S-O-N.

--Jesus dispells dpleasure, and brings us His cheer.

Where is happiness? Not in unbelief, sin, worldliness.

--0, you have your fling and fun - but it won't last.

--It demands a heavy price in many ways. It costs.

--Voltaire had his pleasures; at death said, "I wish I had never been born." A miserable unbeliever.

--He was the one who tried to obliterate Christianity.

--Most have forgotten Voltaire, his like. Not Jesus!

--Lord Byron, poet, lived for pleasure, and evils.

--He wrote, "the worm, the canker, the grief are mine."

Nor is happiness in a world of wealth.

--Jay Gould, and others, had plenty of that. Unhappy.

--At death Gould said, "I am the most miserable man in the world." You see, greed corrupts us.

Nor is happiness in position, power, or fame itself.

--Nor glories, and honors, of all kinds.

--Alexander the Great conquered the world, then wept, "because there were no more worlds to conquer."

My dear friend, true happiness is in the Lord Jesus.

--Ask those "born again." Jesus, the door to joy!

That's why Jesus gave His "Be-atitudes" in Matthew 5.

--So we could be in an attitude of gratitude, praises, witness and service, in a life of faithfulness.

--"Walking in the light as He is .." makes one happy.

--Don't try to find it in the wrong place! Try Jesus!

--If uncertain, or confused what to do, go to Him.

--"Call to Me, I will answer you .. (Jer. 33:3).

--Jesus said, "Ask ..and receive .. seek .. and find."

--James 1:5 says, "If any lack wisdom, ask of God, Who gives to all liberally, and withholds not."

Help is what Jesus meant when He said, "go in and out, and find pasture." That "pasture" is His provision.

--You see, "The Good Shepherd" cares for His sheep.

--You and I need the care, like sheep, of a Shepherd.

My Dad used to raise a few cows. Once he tried sheep.

--Ever raised sheep, in a rented pasture?

--He found sheep are a lot like people - they stray.

--They get lost. Easy prey to predators. Need care.

--He couldn't be with them always! Needed a shepherd.

--For His sheep, Jesus shepherds us .. always, 24/7.

I need that help of my Shepherd and Savior. Most do.

--Come to Jesus. Friend, He can save .. and bless.

--He's defeated the devil! Defeated death, diseases.

--He can defeat our doubts, difficulties, differences.

"How?" you ask. As we trust Him, pray, and obey.

--"Born again" believers know His "grace is sufficient in all things," to help any need we may face.

--Terrorists and sin rob many of hope these days.

--But there is hope in Jesus! His Word. His Spirit.

--Friend, we sin. Need forgiving. Come in "The Door."

--The Door of Hope .. Heaven .. Happiness .. Help.

--A hope that is filled with assurance and certainty!

None are hopeless. Jesus is the greatest hope, ever.

--Fulfilled the prophecies. Worked miracles. Arose!

--Jesus has not been tried and found wanting .. He has been wanting to be tried .. but not tried.

--He is the God of Hope. A hope that is real, true.

Why do we emphasize Jesus? To identify our God, Jesus revealed.

--There are all kinds of gods; but none like the God of the Bible, that Jesus reveals. A holy God, of love.

--Since Jesus came, He is the one door of salvation.

In Bethlehem is the Church of the Nativity, built over the manger where Jesus was born, nearly 2000 years ago.

--A huge church on Manger Square, we've been all over.

--To enter, there is one door, it is low; one stoops.

--It is narrow, only one can enter at a time - as each must individually believe, and follow the Savior.

--It illustrates, to me, what God's Word teaches.

--As the Ark, as this church, as heaven .. there's one door to God's gifts .. it is in Jesus. Enter in!

--Rejoice with the saved!
